How Hotel Room Energy Waste Happens (And How We Calculate It)

Across Nigerian and West African hotels, energy typically accounts for one of the largest operating expenses—especially when properties rely on diesel generators alongside Band A commercial grid tariffs.

The single biggest source of avoidable consumption is unoccupied room HVAC and water heater load: guests leaving split ACs running at 18°C while out for meetings, reception forgetting to cut room power after checkout, or staff cooling unbooked rooms.

The Calculation Formula

  • 1. Daily Idle kWh = Affected Rooms × Room Load (kW) × Idle Hours/Day
  • 2. Diesel Cost/kWh ≈ Delivered Diesel Price per Litre ÷ 3.2 kWh/L
  • 3. Blended Cost/kWh = (Gen Share × Diesel/kWh) + (Grid Share × Tariff/kWh)
  • 4. Recoverable Savings = Total Idle Cost × 85% Occupancy Automation Factor
